CarePal@SG

Community support mobile application concept created to help elderly, low-income, and vulnerable residents navigate daily life during pandemic lockdowns and circuit breaker periods.

CarePal@SG preview

Project Overview

CarePal@SG was a team project developed around the challenge of supporting residents during COVID-19 lockdowns and circuit breaker periods. The idea centered on combining practical support, community assistance, and daily engagement into a single mobile experience for groups such as elderly residents, low-income families, and other vulnerable individuals impacted by restricted movement.

Key Highlights

Built an iOS mobile application using Swift, designed for accessibility and usability for elderly and vulnerable users.

Implemented a QR-based rewards and voucher redemption system to support distribution of essential goods.

Developed an interactive mini-game to improve engagement and reduce isolation during lockdown periods.

Integrated camera and MapKit to enable donation verification and location-based support workflows.

Designed a dietary filtering system to deliver personalized food recommendations based on user needs.

Problem

During lockdown and circuit breaker periods, residents faced isolation, restricted movement, panic buying, and limited access to daily essentials. Elderly and vulnerable groups were especially affected, needing support for food, medicine, emotional well-being, and reliable information, while families also experienced stress from prolonged confinement and disruption to daily routines.

Solution

Our team designed CarePal@SG as a mobile platform that combines donation, essentials redemption, points and rewards, mini-games, and live COVID-19 news updates. Donations would be verified and managed through a structured Firebase backend, while users could browse essentials, redeem items based on need, stay informed through API-based updates, and engage with light activities to reduce isolation and support mental well-being.

Outcome

The project strengthened my experience in agile teamwork, product ideation, mobile UI/UX prototyping, backend planning, and API integration. It also gave me hands-on exposure to building solutions around real social challenges while balancing user empathy, technical feasibility, and iterative delivery across sprints.
